SHOCKING THE RATS.

The present need for the extermination of rats makes the following of more than ordinary interest. An American buy, twelve years old, once cleared Ills father’s cellar of a pest of rats. Out of some fruit-jars he constructed a battery of three Leyden Jars, which ho connected and placed upon a large iron plate that lonehed the tin-foil on the outside. The bait was arranged in such a way that when (he rat. stepped upon the plate to seize it, he at once completed t luj eonueetkm between tie.' outside and the inside of the jars, whieh were discharged through his body, killing him on the spot. The jars were charged by tin electrical machine, also of the boy's construction. From the room above the cellar n couple of wires were nut through the floor, and as soon as It" heard a rat squeak the young in' vent or immediately re-charged fh" machine. In three hours twentylive rats were slain.
