THE WEATHER.
Over half an inch of rain fell at Tenuikal: up to nine o’clock yesterday morning, and the day was dull and cool. Coming after three intensely hot days the rain was the more welcome, and it will do im- ' mense good to the crops, and freshen the pastures, which have gone off rapidly. It will give the turnips and potatoes a new lease of life and greatly benefit the grain crops. , Tho roads have been cutting up hadly lately and the moisture will do something towards consolidating them again. The temperature registered at Winchester in the "(rue shade” was SS deg. on Friday and Saturday and HO deg. on Sunday morning. Up to 9 o’clock yesterday morning a little, over half an inch of rain, 53 points had fallen. Floods have occurred on the West C.oast. From 4 o'clock on Monday morning, until 9 o'clock on Tuesday morning lover six inches of rain fell, and further heavy rain fell during Tuesday. Many paddocks were under water, and a land-slip occurred on the railway at Oraoto, but was not serious. There was a heavy tropical shower iu Dunedin on Tuesday afternoon, causing flooding in some parts of the city, but little damage was'done. -Ihopkoeers had an anxious time for i while, the water being up (o the footpaths. It was one of the heaviest downpours experienced for some rears, but luckily did not last long. There was a heavy rainfall in Cenral Otago. The Government. Meteorologist's 'orecast telegraphed yesterday is as ollows: Tho indications are for south'eas- ;• erly moderate to strong prevailing, ilxpcct changeable and showery veather. The barometer has a Hang tendency.
