OTTAWA, July 6. Sir Thomas White, the former Finance Minister, Avill ho the new Canadian ITemier. An oilicial announcement Avill be made on Wednesday. 4 he Rrime Minister elect of Canada, in succession to Sir Robert Laird Borden, Sir Thomas William White, was horn at Haldon County, Ontario, on November R 3, IbUti, and is therefore in his 64th year. He is an Irishman by parentage, his fattier having emigrated from Omagh, County Tyrone. He was educated at the Fubho and High Schools, in the Province of Ontario, and at the University of Toronto, where he gradnateel, gaining the gold medal of tiie Law Society of Upper Canada. Ho was called to the Ontario Bar in 1800, and became A'icc-president and general manager of the National Trust Company of Toronto, Montreal and Winnipeg. Prior to 1941 lie took .no part in politics, hut at the general election in that year he entered the lists as a Conservative champion, and scoured a seat in the House ol Commons for Leeds, Ontario. On the resignation of -Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the election having resulted in a Liberal debacle, Mr White, as he then Avas, .was asked by Sir Robert Borden to join the Cabinet as Minister of Finance — a unique experiment on the part ol the Conservative leader seeing that Mr While Avas a new member and entirely Avithout experience in affairs. .However, results proved that the Prime Minister was a good judge of men, as Sir Thomas, as he soon afterwards became, proved himself a highly capable administrator and quickly made his mark in the House. He resigned the position ofi Minister of Finance a short time ago and was sncceeeled by Sir Henry Drayton, A cablegram received j a few days ago indicated that the succession to the Premiership lay betivecii Sir Henry Drayton and Mr A. Meighcn, Minister of the Interior.
