OBITUARY.

SHABBY BUXTON. A very old and highly respected Canterbury settlor, Mr Searby ton, died at his ibsiden.ee, Allcntoiyon Monday last, after a very long illness, in his 81th year. He was born in Lincolnshire, England, and came to the Dominion in 1865, with his wife and family. He first settled at Springston, where he commenced farming, and later removed to West Meltofn Subsequently he settled on Itangatata Island, where ho was engaged in farming pursuits lor over thirteen years, and, selling out, wont to Totara Valley. His stay at Totara Valley was short, and during recent years lie had Jived retired in Ashburton. Mr Buxton 'was none of the most prominent men in his dis- ; tli.t. He opposed the late’Hon. AY. Rollcston in the Parliamentary elections for the Gladstone district, and after being elected hold the seat for several years. He was assent speaker, and took an active interest in all public matters, and was a prominent member and local preacher t in the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches in the several districts in which he resided during his lifetime. He was a most kindly man, a gored ‘ husband and father, and a good neighbour. The deceased leaves four sons and three daughters to mourn their loss, his wife having predeceased him by four and a half years. His sons are Mr J. Buxton (Muline, West Australia), Messrs T. Buxton and B. Buxton (Timaru), and Mr F, Buxton (of Messrs Buxton and Thomas, Ashburton). His daughters arc Miss M. Buxton (Allenton, Ashburton), Mrs J. Smith (late of Wanganui and now of Auckland),: and Mrs, E. Lndrill i(Geraldilae).

The death is announced at Ottawa, Canada, of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the distinguished Liberal leader, a t the a k° of 78. He resigned the Liberal leadership only last year. While prepaling for church on Sunday he had a paralytic stroke, from which bo did not recover.
