A VALUED CITIZEN. DEATH OF CAPTAIN IV. FEBG-US PATERSON. Lata on” Monday afternoon tbs sad news of the death of Captain IV. Fergus Paterson/ reached Geraldine, by means of a cable message to Mrs Paterson from Mr Archie Paterson, brother of the late 'Captain Paterson, who was with him at the last. Early on Monday morning a cable had reached Mrs Paterson from the Defence Minis'!er; sLatingl that her hus.band was lying ill with bronchial pneumonia at the Hornchurch Convalescent Hospital in England, rud this may have in a measure prepared her ;for /the sad news: to follow. Nevertheless Hut blow must have been a terrible otic, and Mrs Paterson is assured of the heartfelt sympathy of the whole community in her great bereavement. 'I he late Captain Paterson’s life was a very valuable one to the people -of Geraldine, for apart from his consummate skill as a turgeoji and his work as a doctor—-in which latter capacity he was a Mend ns well as a physician to his patients —he took a very active interest in the advancement of the town, and was the inaugurator of the advancement scheme and; one of its most enthusiastic workers. The late Dr Paterson had hardly started on his second year of ollice as Mayor of the borough when the serious state of affairs at the front called on him to feel it his duty to enlist, and ho immediately made arrangements lo leave, after his preferred services had been accepted, and smite last J une his skill has been at the disposal of the sick and wounded. The late Dr Paterson was appointed. Captain of the Tcumka Rifles, in 1903.'. He was. transferred to • the Geraldine Volunteers in 1 1)0(3, and to the active (unattached) in 1003. He was 1 ransferred to the reserve of officers in 1010,., and to the N.Z.M.C. with the rank of captain, in 1012.
News was received at Tomuka yesterday from the Minister of lJofen.ee that! Gunner Denis Connell, of Arcwhenua, died at Glasgow on hth November, from pneumonia. He was a son; of Mrs and the fate Mr John Connell, af Arowhenua. Hs was born at Arowhonna, and received his education at St. Joseph’s School, Tcm.uka. On leaving school, vtth bis brother Morris, he worked on his pa- ( rents’ farm at Arowhcnua. Hu "3-
a very quiet young- man and a lavourite with all who knew him. The late Gunner Connell left with the loth Reinforcements.
