At th« present time one of tine most papular means of raising! a ijavy pounds for patriotic purposes is the Bard-up and Fancy Dreaa, Sodal, and they are being held In all pants of the district. The Ladies’ Miniature Rifle Club was the firet to hold one In Temuka this season but un fortunately thtiir efforts were almost nullified by a pouring wet night. On Thursday evening, one was held iu the Maori Hall, Arowhenua, the organisers being Mosdames F. Torepe and ii. Solomon. The weather was beautifully lino—the night being frosty and moonlight—and there was a largo attendance, fully 100 couples assembling to enjoy themselves, and help a good cause—the profits going to the Maori Soldiers’ Parcels, Fund, Timaru, Pleasant .Point, Winchester, and all parts of the district were represented by visitors, and a number of returned . doikdlers 1 ( erc I' irst-class music was provided by Misses Gmy and Hopkins oh (piano) and Mr Moran (violin), Mr H.‘ Boulter playing an "extr* on the-' bag-' pipes, Messrs Solomon and . Wixon carried out the duties of Master ol Ceremonies’ in «, capable manner, and in enjoyable supper of hot saveloy* andi potatoes, followed by] ■and* wiohes and cake* was handed round between eleven and twelve o’clock.. A* usual at these functions there were far more ladies than gentlemen in fancy nod hard-up drosses, and many of- their, costumes ■ were original and exceedingly pretty, and had involved a considerable amount of work and taste. For the ladies' liinoy. dress, Mrs K. liehu (“Go.Mia ■JuT') was awarded lirst prize, and Miss Eva Moore (“JJutcli Girl'), second, while in, thjei ladies' ‘‘hard-up/’ airs ALihaua won the lirst prize, in me, gentlemen/s dresses, Mr ferry ivennedy (a returned soldier) .won tua lust prize tor fancy with a jockey's costume, and in the bard-ups Messrs ueixu and Taipanci (“Swaggers";) were awarded the prizes. As the ladies and gentlemen came forward to receive , their prizes .they were loudly applauded. The judges were i Mcatlames F. Sanders, G. Taylor, and J, Gain. A feature of the evening was a “waltzing compe Ation," For this seven couples entered, and a capital exhibition, of .waltzing was given, the prizp going to,. Mr A. Mcivay and Miss Lynch. The judges were) (Messrs W. McCallum, J. Behu, and Gason. Miss C. Friers danced the Highland fling very gracefully, and was encored. The prizes were kindly given by. Mrs Sanders, Messrs Gapper and clieen, A. E. Smith, Cameron, anti v. GnbUcsn Mr C. Talbot, M-P-, verjj thoughtfully sent the organisers ' a donation o£ 10s to, the funds., vAltogather, the soedai was a marked success, and the organisers may well led pleased with the result ol the efforts.
