The chairman of the General Industries Protection Association, Timaru, wrote that at a meeting of his committee on May I'J, the matter of interference by strikers on the wharves with free labour was discussed, and instances were given 'where in one oi two cases free labourers had been persuaded to leave the vessels by some of the Federation Executive. It was unanimously felt that this interference should be stopped, and that the most elVccti:al way to do it would be to follow the system that they were good' enough to adopt at the new wharf —namely, by roping or fencing it oP, and allowing admission by t-icaet only. Messrs .Rolleston, Turnbull and Voting, members of the Board, were also members of the Association, and they had agreed to the proposal. The Secretary said the request had been given client to. The District Health Oflicor forwarded a copy of the amended regulations to prevent the landing of rats from healthy ships. He asked for the continued co-operation of the Board in giving effect to those regulations. The Auckland Exhibition Committee advised that all applications for provincial courts would close absolutely on May 31, 1913. A large amount of space was over subscribed for. Tho Mackenzie County Council wrote bringing under notice tho necessity for a readjustment in the representation of the Mackenzie County on the Board. By an alteration in tho boundaries of the Mackenzie and Geraldine Counties, the former County now includes the larger portion of the’ old Mount Peel Road District , this additional territory forming the Opuha riding of tho Mackenzie The Council suggested that the Fairlic, Albury and Tokapo ridings of the Mackenzie County should return one member to the Board, and the iOpuha riding and the ML Reel Hoad District should be grouped lor the purpose of electing the member, now returned by the Mt. Peel Road District. The Council hoped the Board would give the matter favourable consideration with a view to having the Harbours Act, 19H), amended so as to give effect to the Council's wishes—The Board decided to inform the Council that they did not approve of the suggestion.

]IARHOUR MASTKR. The harbour master reported as follows : The total arrivals for tire month of April were 38 steamers and 1 sailing vessel, of an aggregate of 46,756 tons, and that departures were 33 stearriors and 2 sailing vessels, of an aggregate of 41,3215 tons. ■ The Weather during the month of May has been very changeable, with heavy south-east and easterly seas and strong easterly gales. The usual soundings have been taken during the month and recorded in the soundings book. Owing to a heavy sea running, the s.s. ‘‘Zealandic” remained in the roadstead from 2nd to 6th May, when she berthed at No. 3 wharf. ENGINEER'S It I’.PORT.

The Engineer reported in regard to dredging, that since last meeting l(i,0l!0 tons have been removed from the inside cut, but no dredging has

been done in the outside channel owing to bad weather and the continuous swell prevailing during most of the time. ITomi Iho sth to Sth in-

slant the dredging was suspended altogether, as there was too much sea outside to discharge. The inside cut has advanced Kid feet during the month. I have arranged to start a new cut in the outside channel, nearer the inner entrance and on the south side of the channel. The moorings

are now being prepared for this work. The “Taniwha” has been engaged on maintenance work at the various berths. EASTERN EXTENSION. The recent continued rough weather has made it apparent that n further 200 feet of th c shore end of this mole should bo built up to the full height to psevent thc shingle on the south beach from being washed over the wall during heavy weather. this work can be carried out in conjunction with the extension of the mole, and it should bo commenced at an early date, hour years ago a length of 200 foot from the root was made up to the ' full height with good results in preventing (he shingle passing (he wall, as well as increasing the shelter at the outer berth of No. 1 wharf. Mr Stickings said he could not see that the shingle coming through thc mole would do any harm. As a matter of fact it would do good, by making the mole stronger. The only thing it -might interfere with was the slip at the root of the extension. Mr Young said they would want to build wharves out there some day. It was decided to hold thc matter over in thc meantime. STA N 1)1 NO- COMMITTEE. The Standing Committee made the following recommendation's Agreement with the N.Z. Railways re sidings.—That the agreement be signed, but that the Department’s attention be drawn to the fact that it was clearly understood by the representatives who waited on Mr Ronayno that the term was for a full ten years. Mackenzie County Representation.---That the Mackenzie County Council be advised that, the Hoard docs nit approve of the suggestion thalt the Opulm riding should bo grouped with the Mount Heel Road Hoard district. Thc report was adopted. HORSE EUR THE WHARVES. Mr tV it hell asked If anything had been done in connection with getting a horse for the wharves. A horse was verv necessary there. The chairman said thc Hoard had asked the Railway Department for a horse many times, but they could get no satisfaction.
