A military tournament with soldiers w a ist deep crossing a river was also appreciated, and amongst the amusing ones was ‘‘Toutollim’s Mistake,” "The i’oiion | Label,” aud several others, which created roars o£ amusement. On the whole thd pictures were really good, and were made the more enjoyable because of the excellent music of Mr J. CooiuJjs's Baud. Wo understand .that it is the intention of the company to give another show in Temuka in the near future. At the Temuka Technical School on .VLouday last Mr Brown, Agricultural , instructor to the South Canterbury Board, gave the lirst of his lectures to a class consisting mainly of farmers. The subject dealt with was grasses and the laying down of holds so ns to bo of continuous profit to the owner, and although the subject was not fully' treated, it was dealt with in such a-n able W'ay that if South Canterbury land-owners could work on the principlet so clearly sot out, many thousands of pounds would be made. Mr Brown gave some very' interesting ligtires at to the mixing of top and bottom grasses, and his rules for the amount of seed to plant t G the acre wore instructive aud valuable. The lecturer also had something to say r about the prominence given to perennial rye in this district and one fanner present said it was information which in itself was W'ortli a gfcat deal more than the fee charged for attending the class. Mr Brown also Went into the merits of the various grasses. It it a pity that the young farmers ’finnot see the money they are likely o lose by' not giving a little lime to , icicntilic farming, and it is dlscoiu'ag- ~ ng to a person who comes to Now ■ Zealand with so much knowledge of

his subject. Mr Brown s a ys, and rightly too, that the subject is such a wide one and cost so much study that it would be waste of time to lecture to any but a largo class. It is to lie hoped that Temuka will not lose Ihe services of Mr Brown through a lack of enthusiasm on the part of farmers. Those who were present are keen to go on with the work, especially ns the syllabus includes practical work, the use. of lantern slides, and microscopic examinations. The dairying industry is also in the coarse and those with milking cows should take the opportunity of bringing themselves right up to date, as the. export of butter and cheese is likely to be n much greater thing for New Zealand Ilian it is at present. We understand that there is likely to bn an agricultural class at Pleasant Point. What iir (he world's the use of [rolling O'er life's (roubles every day ?
