Tho following applications for alterations on the rate roll were applied for ;—James Chalmers, 102 acres, C,lb>dcboyc. to Mr If. From Mr Hugh Vickcrman, engineer Public Works Department, Christchui*h, in reply to letter from the Hoard dated 22nd September, asking the Board to supply sketch of culverts the Board proposed, and estimate, and the Board would undertake construction and responsibility for same, lie thought the matter could bo arranged at once.—After a short discussion the ov-ersecr was instructed to supply sketch of culverts as asked for, and agree to carry out the work if desired. The members expressed the opinion that one of the largo drains proposed was unnecessary, and the 'overseer was authorised to make any suggestions that ho thought would te»d to economy and efficiency in carrying out the work. Mr Win. Kensington, Unidor-Socro-tary Department of Lands, Wellington, wrote regarding tho Board’s letter of the Kith August in reference to the vesting of shingle reserve 10G9 on the reserve No 10G9 within the Borough North Town Bolt. Only the portion of of Temuka, and containing 2 acres 22 perches (see N.Z. Gazette, 21st July, 1910, page 2010) was vested in the Borough, and the balance, 2 roods still remains unvested. This action was taken ou the advice of tho Commissioner of Grown Lands, Christchurch, who stated that the reserve lies partly within the Borough of Temuka and partly within tho boundary of the Tc-niuka Bead district, the larger portion being in the Temuka Borough. The Borough of Temuka applied to have the portion of tho reserve within tho borough vested in it, and this was agreed to on Lie recommendation of the Commissioner. The portion of the reserve within the Temuka Road district had not been interfered with. The other portion oi . the reserve was vested in the borough in trust for a gravel pit. .In repiy to the chairman the overseer said the por lion of the reserve in tho Road Disuiet was really part of tho North Town Belt, and was useless for a gra\el pit. it was agreed that the cbnleats of the letter bo noted. Mr T. Urr asked for permission to cut up lomc tree stumps in the Heard s reserve gt Waitohi, and offered to pay for same. —This mutter was left in the hands of the overseer. the overseer applied for and was granted a weeks holiday, to enable iiim to recover from his recent illness. Mr IV. i'hilp applied for timber for a crossing to his property at Ora.eipaoa and the overseer was instructed to supply the same. it was resolved that notices to clear gorsu be served ou lour occupiers of uuul in the Urari district. Lots were drawn to decide the members to retire this year, the result being that Messrs Talbot and Amritage writ retire. T-11K BOARD'S OFFICKS AND VARD. Just before the meeting terminated the Roard went into committee to consider mutters with reference to a site (or the Board’s office, overseers usideuce, and yard, and ou resuming it Was decided that the overseer advertise inviting oners from owners oi sites suitable for the purpose uliier within or outside tho borough.

ULBLTAtitBXb. Ali- Warning waited on the Board in rcturcucu to two matters. The first was with reference to cleaning a dram, this hud been before the Board several times, and nothing had yet ween settled to hi# satisfaction at any rate. The agreement that he had with ihe Board was that he should clean the Lot) side and the ,Board clean the lower side. He hud cleaned out file drain and now it seemed the Board objected to settle for it. ihe drain was not cleaned last year, as it ought to have been. In reply to the chairman, the overseer said the Board had always paid for the cleaning of the drain on Unit side of the road.

Mr Wareing said that the Board raving carried out the arrangement so Jong it ought to go on until they made a fresh arrangement if they wished lo vary the old one. The chairman said that the Board was under the impression that they w»ru paying -too much, binee Air Wareing had given up possession cf thj land the Board considered the agreement at an end.

Mr Wareing said he was m possession when the drain ought to have been cleaned, and in equity he conm.l.t, ,| ho should bo paid for the work Wien le- had the work done 1m was (old he would he paid for ilThe chairman said he under a,m I llml Mr War,'inn also complained that the Board had lump up this with another regarding access to the river be low Oralcipaoa. U might be as well to take the (wo matters at once. Mr Wareing said they could take the two tilings together. lie held that he had a valid claimi against die Boaul for j-ect for a road line giving aecess

to tlio river. Mr Wareing then pro- j duced tv plan showing that a short piece of road formed by the Board to obviate the necessity nf using the road linoi rented from him was also on his (Mr Wareing’.?) properly. The plan, lie said, was a copy of the Government plan in the Land Office at Christchurch, and also in tlie Road Hoard's cilice. -He (Mr Warning))! got a surveyor to survey Ids land, I and ho had found that tho land was on his property. To the chairman Mr Waiving explained that the Board could not make a road on to the riverbed without encroaching on his land or maxing a bridge and filling up a very soft deep hole. The chairman ashed Mr Waiving what he proposed. The Board had been paying £5 per annum for tho road line and thought it too much. Mr Wareing said if the Board liked to continue the arrangcmjont he would ho willing. This was the only ford open to the 'public. O'Mara'a ford was dangerous. Mr Armitage) suggested that the members should meet at the spot and decide what should bo done. Mr Bisset. said there was one alternative ; the Board could take_ tho land they required under tho Public Moths Act,

Mr Wareing said be of course recognised that After a little further discussion Mr Wareing thanked the Board, and left the meeting, and the Board decided to pay for cleaning out tho drain in accordancJ with the former arrangement, and that the arrangement be now terminated. Also that the members of tho Board meet Mr Wareing at the ford at 2.30 p.m. to-dayl Tl'hiiraduy’). Messrs Downes and Mcllwrick l waited on (ilio Board in reference to a new road that has been petitioned for at Milford. Mr Downes said when the petition was sent to the Board praying for the opening of a road through Mr J. Brown's land, it was thought that there was a road lino there. It hud been found that there was not a road line there, but tho petitioners s%HI wanted the road. He had measured with a cyclometer the distance that would be saved to a person coming to Temuka, and found it would mean a saving of 1 mile 30 chains. But the road was also wanted because it would give a direct route to tho freezing work's, They now had to bring their stock up and skirt Tomuka, aKcl go right out of their way. A road where asked lor would mean a saving of several miles. The chairman asked how many who signed the petition were directly in-

teres led. How many who signed would actually save the I mile anS 30 chains mentioned by Mr Downes. Mr Downes said the names on tho petition were all bona fide ones. There was another reason for asking for the road, and that was the difficulty settlors had in getting a com crusher or chafTcultor from the Milford side unless it was a big job. The chairman said not only was (here no road where one was applied for, but Mr Brown objected to the road at all.

Mr Downes said Mr 11. Macaulay had expressed his willingness to sell a road lino it Mr Brown objected, and it was practically on the same line, only on tho other side of the fence. Mr Met 1 wrick said Mr Macaulay s land was now in drop, and could therefore not be got just now. The chairman said in any case it would lake some time to got a road where asked for, as enquiries would have to lie made and formalities complied with. The Board decided that the overseer shohld make inquiries, and report to next meeting. OVERSEER’S RETORT.

The overseer reported as follows 1 have tho honour to submit the following report for the past month;— Tho daymen have been engaged in s.picatling shingle, breaking stones, impairing culverts, and other odd jobs. Contract No. 4, general repairs.—The contractor has completed repairs on Stewart’s road, Baker’s road, Gladstone’s road and Paterson’s road, and are now on the Clandeboye road. Mr Wareing. is unwilling to agree to l the! Boards terms in connection with the cleaning, out of the Boilingdown road drain. Ho considers that he is entitled to the full amount claimed for cleaning out the drain. The-Board has not yet balloted to decide as to which members arc to retire at the end of tho curve*! year.
