HORSE STEALING.
A TEMUKA .CASE
At the Magistrate's Court, Tiuiuru,; oa Thursday, before Mr V. G. Day,' S.M., Joseph Sweeney appeared on remand, and pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a horse, saddle and bridle, value £ls, from Robert John Thistleton on 29th March at Temuka.
Sub-Inspector Green conducted the j case for the police and called evidence. R. J. Thistleton, lively stable-keeper i at Temuka, said ho knew thj a<uis»;l.| who visited his stable at L'emaka on the Sunday before Easter, mil hoed a horse, saddle and bridle to ride to | Seadown. Accused said ho would return at 4 p.m. the samo day. A<. used had hired a horse fro.n witness I twice previously and paid the hire. He did not aut'aorUo the I accused to deal with tho horso i:i any way. Witness took < f the horse from Mr Simmons' and took it back to Temuka. « . William Simmons, farmer ft Makikihi, said that he knew the accused, having seen him at Makildhi on the 29th March, when he came 'here with a horse, saddle and bridle, telling witness that he wanted to sell them. They made a bargain and witness bought the turnout for £3, accused givin? him a receipt (produced) for the money. When the owner came about the horse and claimed it, witness gave it to him. Since that time he had not seen accused until that day. , , , Accused pleaded guilty, and as iie had already been committed to Dunedin Supreme Court for sentence on another previous charge, the Magistrade committed him to that place.
