GERALDINE BOWLING CLUB

An adjourned meeting of members oi the Geraldine Bowling Club was held oh Tuesday night in the Council Chain) bers, when, there was a good attendance, and Mr F. It. Flatman presided The secretary read an estimate received from the contractor for turfing the green and top-dressing it, the total cost being £9O IQs after reducing £ls for work that would have been done had the green been sown. At the request of the club the contractor stated the advantages of«a turfed green compared with a sown one. It would not require weeding annually aa a sown one, and would not take near the labour in catting the grass The upkeep would therefore be considerably less. One of the great features was that should there be any portion of the green untrue ie could bo readily brought up again, without having to resow, which often had to be done with sown greens. It practically meant that they would have a surface on their green right away, without having to wait for years u attain the same end by sowing. Mr Collins put down the Canterbury Club’s new green for the exhibition season, using turf brought from an old green in Cashel street, anti it was played on two weeks after the work was completed, visitors to Christchurch for the exhibition bowling tournament speaking in unqualified praise of the excellence and trueness of the green and wondering at its results in so short a time.

Mr Logan said ho was satisfied that the turf was the right thing, and the extra cost would be more than made up in the end by the saving in upkeep. He predicted that if Geraldine put down a fii-st-class, green in turf it would Ik; a great attraction to the town, and would bring a class of people who might decide to settle in the town. He moved that the club go in for a turf green as suggested. Tbi resolution was seconded by Mr M. Campbell pro forma, and there being no amendment it was. declared car ried unanimously on a show of hands. Questions put to the contractor by Messrs R. Taylor and Lochnor, brought a promise from him that he would guarantee the green for two years.,and during that time would replace any turf that failed or died out. He would also leave a deposit of £2O with the club for two years as a guarantee of good workmanship. On the motion of Mr T. Sherratt, seconded by Mr Lechncr it was resolved that the tender of Mr W. H. Colling bo accepted. Mr Logan brought forward a ques. tion re holding a bazaar in aid of the chib’s funds, but Mr J, Kennedy said the Geraldine St. (Patrick’s Sports Association had already bespoken a bn■/oar this year on behalf of the cycle track. On the motion of Mr Logan, it was decided that a sub-committee be appointed to meet the St Patrick's Sports committee and see if a combined bazaar could be hold to the mutual advantage of both clubs. The sub-committeo to consist of Messrs T. Sherratt, Monntford, Chisholm, Flatman, and the mover.

Mr T. Hherrntt suggested that the Snorts Association which was to lye formed of all clubs for control of the domain might take the bazaar up and help to make it a success. The finance committee were authorised to make arrangements with the bank or a private individual for the loan of about X'2oo to complete the works and purchase necessary appliances for the up-keep of the green, etc.

On the ‘motion of 'Mr Mounlford it was resolved to register the cliiT) under Hie “'Unclnsscd Societies Act.’ 1 *

A sub- committee was \ appointed to draw up rules and submit them to a future meeting, the committee to consist of Messrs Mounlford, T. Shcrratt, Rawlinson, Barklie, and tlw; secretary. On the motion of Mr Kennedy the sub-coimfuttec ap[)ointod to see about a bazaar was also asked to arrange for an entertainment in aid of the club’s funds. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr I'ar.pdmr iount; and other outside performers who assisted in the club’s recent concert.
