A meeting of the Temuka Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last evening when there was a good muster of members, Lieutenant Sheen presiding. Routine business was dealt with, and tho representative team gave an interesting account of the demonstration at Auckland. Members expressed their dissatisfaction with the water supply in the King street water channels at night. Last night and on Saturday night there was no water llowing down the channels, and in the ease of

a liro this would be a very serious

matter. The hope was expressed that the Council will see to it that there is always a good stream of water llowing down the channels, The recommendation of the coroners jury that some attempt should be made to locate the wrecked Penguin is not viewed with favour by the Marine Department, as in the absence of aiiy reliable guides as to the vicinity in which the vessel made her last dive, the possibility of finding the wreck' is very remote. No one appears to have any idea where the wreck lies, therefore so large a field may have to be dragged with grapnels that u month's work may prove futile. The cost of a vessel like the Tutanekai when in commission, amounts to something like £3o> the day, and the Department does not consider that the search should be undertaken unless more definite instructions concerning the vicinity of the vessel are furthcoming. Says the LyHelton Times :—Great dissatisfaction is expressed by the people of the districts of Winchester, Geraldine, Orari, and Rnngifata in consequence of the proposal of the Railway Department to run one express (rain north and one south, making no slop between Ashburton and Temuka. It is urged by those who complain

that it would have been far more reasonable to have made Oniri a stop-

ping place and to htwo excluded Temuka, as the former station would serve a district far larger than the latter would. A suggestion has been mad*, that the morning express from Chrislehiiroh should stop at Winchester and the evening express to Christchurch should stop at Orari, as this arrangement would suit the whole districts of Winchester. Orari, Kakahu, Geraldine, Woodbury, and Pool Forest.

Often people wonder how it is*that owners qf Dnrraoi cars are so seldom troubled with mishaps, but on examining these cars thoroughly it will be found that they have ono third less parts than any other make of cars in existence. It is a recognised fact amongst all great authorities at Home that to anyone who wants a car for constant J »ard work and also for cheapness of up-keop und reliability, the Darrncq stands alone. Their ever repeated wins in Reliability Tests all over tho world testify to tho above points. Tho npw model, 11/1(3 h.p., which under tost is actually 1(5 brake h.p., although •only lande-d a f»w weeks ago, is already considered by experts to lie tho quietest and most flexible little family car in the colony. Anyqno interested in the purchase of

motor car should not decide entil they have had a run in one of these little cars, the total weight of which is 15cwt, and which travels at a speed of It) miles an hour, beside-? being a wonderful hill climber, and exceptionally economical in petrol. Dnrracqs are also making a small pattern -I cvlinder PJ/I-1 h.p.. which will be rotailed at £350. The new pattern Do Dions, or which we him also taking orders for indent, are the following :- 10/12 h.p. 1 cvlinder, P2/U h.p. 1 cylinder, and 18 h.p. Further information and trials, wib be given qn application to Messrs SKeaies and Bockaert's garage, Timaru, this firm being the sole New Zealand agents for oth Do Diqn and Darraoqi.

The National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ltd., will hold an important sale of horses at the Temuka Saleyards to-day. About 50 horses are to come under the hammer, including a special entry of buggy, carriage, and saddle horses from Ash wick station.

There was a jyery large attendance oi ' Uuyers fnorn all parts of the district at Mr W. K. Macdonald's clearing sale at Raukapuka yesterday, and good prices were obtained all round for household furniture and effects. Mr J. Mundell conducted the sale, and bidding was fairly spirited throughout. Anyone looking for really good value in boots couldn't do better than inspect A. Gabites' lovely stock. This linn has just landed a beautiful lot of Sunday boots that for style and value cannot be touched. In addition to selling goods at Timaru prices marked in plain figures, they give 1/discount in each pound. No exchange charged on Timaru cheques.
