FAREWELL SOCIAL TO J.S. YOUNG.

Mr J. S. Young, who has been cn- • caged in home missionary work for three years for the Geraldine Presby.terian Church, was entertained > to a farewell social 'in the Oddtellows Hall on Thursday evening. There was a good attendance of members and friends of the Presbyterian Church, and •& most enjoyable evening was £ The' : ißev. A. B. Todd, on behalf of the subscrbers presented a purse of sovereigns to Mr Young and wished him every success in his studies at the Theological College, Dun'-xlin, where he goes to qualify for the ministry. Mr Todd also congratulated Mr Young on his approaching marriage and hoped that the steps he was about to take would bo crowned wieh happiness. He alluded to Mr Young's many good' qualities and bore testimony to his sincere christiaii character. The Rev. (Mr Todd, said the gathering that evening called forth -mingled feelings. There was always the sadness of parting,, for it was a world of changes, but they did not meet to linger on that view of tho question. It was more to wish Mr Young Cod-speed, and try to 'share in that hope ,iind anticipation with which he was entering upon a new sphere of life. Mr Young had been with them for the better part of three years, and came to New .'Zealand ;a stranger m a strange land. But they had come to know and esteem him for his very work's sake. Mr Young came highly commended, and possessed in a great measure these qualities necessary and useful for the calling he had undertaken. He believed Mr Young would make a very successful minister. The speaker said Jie often envied Mr Young the 'facility with which he was able to introduce religious subjects in Ins conversations with individuals. He was interes'ted in his fellow men, and had khe knack of knowing what in. .terosted them. Above all, he had anintense love for souls, and longed to reach those who were -indifferent to religion. Mr Young had been a means of blessing to many and the way had now been opened up for him to pursue the desire of his life, which was to bo a licensed preacher of the bospel Mr Young was well endowed with the qualities of his race and nation and he had shown characteristics of the Scotch 'people in Ins latest imposed venture jnto the bonds of matrimony. They all wished fen well, and congraratulated him on his choice of a helpmate. • Mav success attend him at College, and happiness in lus domestic relations. * „ Tftm Messrs Archibald, Rodman, McLean, Pilkington, Tcinient and KMackenzie also spoke and wished Mr Young health and happiness in his future I career. , .. , _,i Mr> Young suitably replied, and! warmly thanked his friends for thenkind expressions of good will and tei- ' lowship. •' : >**• Durinw the evening songs were sung j by Miss Hammond, Messrs Brown, Gooding, Rawlinson, Re a ddie, and the Rev. A. B. Todd, The Misses Sherratt played a pianoforte duct and Miss E. Mr Younfr will preach in Gerakhne morning and evening on Sunday, for the last time before his departure.
