VISIT OF THE AMERICAN FLEET.

THE WELCOME AT, AUCKLAND

His Worship the Mayor received the following telegram last evening from the Prime Minister giving details regarding the banner or Hags of welcome that it is purposed that each city awl borough should sent to Auckland for display during the visit of 'the American navy ■ A large number of replies from the Mayors of cities and boroughs agreeing to supply flags have been received, and as numbers have asked what the size and design should bo I send this circular telegram to all by way of suggestion. The flags are intended' to be displayed in Queen street Auckland, and the Mayor of that city has consented to this being done. No; poles arc required, merely short, tying ropes. I recommend the size of , the Hags should bo not less (him ten feet by live feet, and made of white bunting with rod lettering, letters to bo fifteen inches in width. I think the lettering should be put on lengthwise. G -Flags will Ijo returned to the respective cities and boroughs when done with. I do not consider it necessary that the Hags should bo cither the British ensign or the stars and stripes, as there will he a largo number of American and English (lags exhibited in Auckland outside the suggested Corporation Hags. In famwriling you the above suggestions I wish, however, to say that while uniformity would have a very nice effect, neither (he size nor the colour of the Hag I suggest is arbitrary. If any of the boroughs find it difficult to have a finis made locally, which Is, im doubt, preferable if the.} ‘ran arrange it, 1 shall lie glad to give instructions in have it made wherever they desire. The Hags should be addressed to the Government Commissioners, at Auckland, and should reach, there not later than the fifth August.—J. G. War'd.
