BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting of the South ! Canterbury Board of Education was held on Tuesday. Ptretent : Messrs J. ! Jackson (chairman), >V. M. Hamilton, T. Sherratt, J. S. Rutherford, (SJ. 1 Maze, G. Lyall, G. ,W. Armitage, and * Rev. G. Barclay. Correspondence relating to the second elections for Committees was received, At Burke’s Pass only two householders attended, at Chammbcrlain only two, at RangGata Island only three householders were present, and at Scotsburn no one attended. Adair, Orton, Belfast, Esk Valley, Rongitira Valley, Waitohi Flat had elected Committees. Orari Gorge and Hakatoramea had not yet reported.

•In consequence of the second failure to elect Committees, the following Commissioners were appointed Chamberlain, Messrs Voatmau and Casey ; Burke’s Pass, Messrsi Guthrie and Keefe ; Scotsburn, Messrs McFarlane and Cooling ; Rangitatu Island, Messrs Riches and Buck. In case tbosq district report failures • also, the following were* named for appointment llakateramea, 'Messrs Downey and Barclay ; Orari Gorge, Messrs G. Raj” and McEeod. BUILDING. COMMITTEE.

The Building Committee, made the following recommendations inter alia —Cave’s request for fence between closets to be declined as unnecessary. Ar- - chitcct to effect some minor repairs at Orton. Geraldine Committee, on giving up halls, on taking possession of new school to dispose of curtains and heaters to best advantage. Southbuni and Orari Gorge were given permission to top trees. The latter asked for help ini the work and) was granted half, not to exceed 30/-. Half cost of improved water supply at Teinuku to bo granlted, estimated cost £‘2s. An offer of 4/- a week us the rent of Upper Waitohi residence to be declined ; t>/-. to be accepted. 'A grant o £5 was made for coal shed at Tomu'ka residence. The architect to report on repairs asked for at I audio residence, on fencing required at P leas ant Po ii 11, and to carry out repairs at Kakahu Bush. On the architect’s report a new concrete, top to tank -and Woodbury, and alteration of a- window into a door at Pleasant Point were recommended. A letter from Gapes’ Valley, asking for chimney, was referred to the Building Committee. Replies were received from the Southland, Wanganui, Nelson, Otago, and North Canterbury, Boards, to inquiries regarding their employment, of “handy men” for making small repairs "to buildings, painting, etc. These had not been dealt with by the Building Committee for want of tone, and it was agreed that the Com nuttoe should hol'd a special meeting for the purpose a fortnight hence. Letters received from the Covniy Councils re the employment of sam tnry inspectors to fumigate schoals were also held over. Messrs Quaiitoclc and Ellery, representing, the Bellield School Committee, waited on the Board to repeat the application refused live years ago tor the removal, of the school to a central site, about 95 chains from tjh e present site.
