SMOKE CONCERT.

A smoke ctoncert was held in the Temuka Hotel on Tuesday evening, for Iho purpose of enabling the friends oi . .Mr. Alex Bowman to bid him farewell anil with him success in his new home. | Mr. Bowman is o. member- of the Ooancil of tho Farm Labourers Union and tho social was arranged by that body. Tho chair was taken by Mr. R. Washington, and about forty persons wore present. Proceedings were commenced with the toast of “Tho King,” which was honoured. Messrs A. Coopei, "• Koen, and W. Spillanc proposed the toast of “The Farm Labourers’ Union,” and coupled with it the name of Messrs Laracy and J. Cooper. In responding! to ihc toast Mr. Lnuv-> mentioned that the Temuka blanch was one of the strong-est iu Canteibury, and Mr. Cooper also responded. Mr.' Gibson contributed a song and Mr. Laracy a recitation. Mr. -L Cooper then proposed tho toast of thi evening, “Our Guest.” Mr. Cooper spoke of the great assistance Mi. Bowman had rendered in forming the branch of the Union. Hd w u s a good fellow, and they wished him every prosperity in his new homo. Mi. Bowman, in responding, said 'they had his best wishes for the future prosperity of the Farm Labourers’ Union, mid said he would be a worker for the same cause wherever he might go. Mr. Cooper then, on behalf °f his farm labourer friends, presented Mr. Bowman with a handsome pipe, and a pretty silver-plated butter dish for Mrs,. Bowman. All hoi>cd they would live long to enjoy their use. Mr. Bowman returned thanks in fitting terms. The health of Mrs. Bowman was then drunk with musical hon t ours, and Mr. Sim responded. Mr. A. Cooper then contributed a song of his own composing, “The Embryo Cockatoo,” and was loudly applauded. Messrs Gibson and Larsen also contributed songs, and Mr. Sim a recitation by Bums. The following toasts were also honoured, “The Ladies” and “The Local Football Club,” “The President and Secretary < f the Farm Labourers’ Union, Messrs McCullough and Thorn.” fin responding to this toast, Mr. Laracy, th* secretary, said he was proud to respond to the toast, Mr. McCnllone'h bad been dubbed “That Little Tinker” by ! his opponents, the reason being that lie was a nasty thorn in tlvrir s : de, though not the only Thorn.)
