ABBOR DAY.
Yesterday, Arbor Day, was celebrated at the Arowhcnuu Native School Fifty or sixty macrocarpa trees were planted by the school children, the ground having previously been prepared by the members of the School Committee, under the supervision of live teacher. Mr. I’arata, M.H.B. for the Southern Electorate, now on a visit to the kainga, in connection with the Ilui, planted the first tree. Before planting the irdc, he delivered aai impressive address to the natives pxplaining to them the object of having such a day set apart, and his pleasure at seeing the Maoris taking such a keen interest on the occasion. In the course of his address ho stated that not many years ago huge native; trees, occupied the same spot on which they were now planting the Pakehn tree. He eulogised the efforts of the Department to restrict the unnecessary destruction of native bush and scenery. Having been requested to name the tree which ho planted ho called- it To Ngaiitlahu Ngtaitimamoe. Mr. Reeves, the head master, briefly; thanked the hon. member for Ms address, and for havinlg performed tha ceremony.
