VICTORIA PARK TENNIS CLUB.
Tiie following is the report and luilajice sheet to bo presented at Cm annual meeting of the u!xm e cLtb t ; be held to-morrow evening • The season 1904-5, the lirai lr. co >- nection with. the newly-revived \ icUoria Park Tennis Club, was in every respect a most successfiil one. Tm* membership, which exceeded 00, far exceeded the most sanguine expectations of the promoters. A most successful opening was held in September when members from the Temuka, Orari, Waitohi, and Timaru tennis clubs were present. From that date onward the courts were occupied continuously
until the end of April, when the sca•—son was brought to a close. During the season the club played six matches three with Waitohi, two with Timaru, and one with Ashburton, but succeeded in winning only one of them. The other games, however, wore all keenly contested and, with one exception, were won by. a very narrow margin of games. The advent of the club’s team in matches was welcomed by the neighbouring clubs as it increased the interest in the game in the district. As will be seen from the accompanying balance sheet, the club is in a __ good position financially. Although there was a good deal of initial ex-
penditure, nevertheless, the member--ship was large, and after paying all accounts, the club has in hand a credit balance of £3 S/3. As there is a pressing need for another court, your committee suggests that the proposal for an increase in subscription receives careful consideration. During the season an attempt was made to play off a combined handicap tournament, but, owing to the late date at which it
commenced, it was not broughtto a conclusion. Profiting by last season’s experience the committee suggests that these tournaments bo held oftener and be carried out on different lines. Another matter which calls for consider ation is the necessity for setting aside at least one court for one day in the week, for the gentlemen, and one for the- ladies. In conclusion, your committee wish to thank all those who assisted in any way throughout the season. They feel that the club has supplied a long felt want in the community, and express the hope that the members will show renewed interest in the game during the coming season.
