SALE OF CATTLE.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—l am a constant subs;;;nor to voar paper but must give it up it v <.r, don’t publish auction sales. On i. st Tuesday 1 came into town wi! limit knowing a , Mt about the large suic ti cat tie which was going on,. I was surprised tk*! : ■ ';e'■sa e < ould be carried on wit iioul ;uU nnt i •.nig. Mow is it that you did not e-dveri isc it ? You ought.' 1 o kiiow that sucli a sale must be interesting to vo ir i (.entry readers. The fact is eery te-' oi I iic farmers of the district, v.ve P’(snnt, and the buyers wen- mostly people from a distance, llow can you expect us farmers lo support ; our paper if vou don’t publish local advert iscmchts ? Only for having to go to town on other business, I e> odd never have known of the sale ai a.'; —I am etc., FA R'dFU. ' (We could not help it. The advertisement appeared in papers, at a distance, and that is the reason people from a distance were Ine buyers. The farmers of this district bad no chance of knowing that the sale was taking place, but that was md, our fault. We applied to the auctioneer for the advertisement, but he did not give it, and of course we could not publish' il. The small attendance at the sale is the result. Our correspondent is, ..unfair in blaming us for it. lie ought to blame the auctioneer, but so far as we can learn he now regrels it more than anybody. The ■non-publication of the advertisement meant a few shillings to us ; hut i i meant pounds to his client. If the, sale bad been placed in the hands of Air John Mundell or Messrs Maiing ami Shallcrass they would have advertised, and the attendance would not have been so small. It is not the first time auctioneers 'nave been taught a lesson in this. Once Mr Mu n dell threatened to sue us for damages because we did not publish bis advertisement ; Air ibomas, of .ashburton, did the same. In both cases the advertisement went, astray, and the omissions were no fault of ours ; Timaru auctioneers think it is not necessary lor them to in th's paper ; but one by one they liud it out. The fact is (hat we have ten subscribers in this district to the one any other paper has, and that consequently anvone who does not. advertise v/it'n us finds out. when 100 late, i hat he has made a miatakc. We trust this explanation will satisfy our correspondent.—Fd.)
