They had almost reached their destination, when a man rode up, and ordered them to hail up. The men drove on, the man followed, fired a revolver and shot McNab through the fleshy part of the arm. Continuing his pursuit, he fired several more shots, one shot taking effect iu the horse's neck without disabling it The fire was returned from the buggy, and the man eventually gave up the chase, and galloped away. He fired a shot at a woman during his flight, narrowly missing her. The police are out tracking him.

Ueneral Sir Hector Macdonald.

General Sir Hector Macdonald arrived at Wellington by the Mararoa at noon on Wednesday, and was enthusiastically received by a large assemblage, including representatives of the Governor, the Government (Sir J G. Ward) and local bodies. The Government and other offices were closed for a couple of hours and the shipping was decorated. An address was presented to the General on behalf of the city, to which he made a brief reply, expressing appreciation of the exceedingly hearty reception given him here and throughout the colony. He was then driven through cheering crowds to Government House, where he will stay while in Wellington. On Friday he paid visits to the local schools and hospitals and other public institutions, and in the afternoon he unveiled memorials at the new Scots Church to the men who have fallen in the war. The Wellington branch of the Naval and Military Veterans Association held a parade at Government House in the evening, for the purpose of being inspected by General Sir Hector Macdonald. There were <l9 decorated veterans on parade. Later. Sir Hector Macdonald was entertained at a banquet by the Gaelic Society, the Governor and the Premier being ' among those present. Sir Hector Macdonald was entertained at luncheon by the members of the General Assembly at Bellamy's on Saturday. About fifty members attended. The Premier occupied the chair, having on his right the guest of the day. Captain Bussed was in the vice-chair. Only two toasts wore honoured—“ The King ” and “ Our Guest,” each proposed by Mr Seddon, and honoured with enthusiasm The General, in his reply, said he would not fail to make known to the ran 1 ' and file of the Army the great honour done him in New Zealand. He had, he said, taken an enormous interest in the colony, and in everything connected with it, for the reason that there were a great number of his own countrymen settled here. He was astonished at the progress made, and thought the pioneers must have been very long headed men He urged members to zealously guard the greit possession under their care, and pointed out that in defence matters, the best rifles, the best guns and engineering talent were at their disposal, if they chose to make use of them. The afternoon was devoted to n railway excursion to the Lower Hutt, and a drive to the Bellevue Gardens. In the morning Sir Hector inspected the cadets of the Public Schools and Wellington College.
