The Geraldine branch of the Canterbury Farmers’ Co, operative stores will be closed om Saturday, November 9th, in honour of the King’s Birthday, Among those who passed their musical examination at Dunedin, conducted oy Mr H. The shopkeepers of Geraldine have decided upon >aturday as the holiday this week, and will keep their places of business' 1 open on Friday night instead of Saturday. A special train will run on the Bth, returning the same night, and an extra express on the 7th. Mr J. J. Meikle, of Southland, will lecture in the Geraldine Oddfellows’ Hall tomorrow evening on “ How he, an innocent man, was made a convict, and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment,” and his efforts since then to obtain redress. A charge of Is for admittance will be made. The Geraldine Town Board have received word through the engineer that the pipes for the high-pressuro water system are on the water and will soon arrive. Yesterday morning the Works Committee, with the overseer, re-surveyed the ground for the rams, etc., and doubtless in a month’s time the work will be in full swing At the Presbyterian Assembly yesterday, the Moderator left the chair during the discussion of a motion moved by the Rev. Mr Dawson —“ That the dress worn by the Moderator of this Assembly he dispensed with in future.” A heated discussion followed, the Rev. Cameron going so far as to say that no Assembly should dictate to him what dress he should wear. If it did he would defy the Assembly. Various amendments and motions were moved, and the Rev Hewitsou moved the previous question, which was carried. In connection with the Presbyterian General Assembly, at Dunedin, the Moderator held a very largely at; ended in recognition the grounds of the First Church on Friday. In the evening there was a reception of the delegates at Knox Church. The Rev. Dr Bruce and the Rev. John Ferguson, of Sydney, congratulated the New Zealand Church on behalf of the New South Wales Church. Bishop Nevill and Dean Fitchett conveyed the congratulations of the Anglicans, the Bishop referring to the progress made in the direction of union of the Churches. The Rev. A. Fairclough (Wesleyan), the Rev. Mr Saunders (Congregational) and the Rev. Mr Borehatn (Baptist) also gave addresses.
