The weather for the past two days 'has been the worst so far experienced this winter. On Thursday the frost hitherto prevailing broke up, and in the forenoon the ground thawed rapidly. Later in the day there was a drizzling rain. The result was to leave all but the heavily-metalled roads in a very bad state for traffic. The rain continued with little intermission through the night, and fell more steadily yesterday. Farm work is temporarily suspended, and general traffic, if not impeded, made decidedly unpleasant. The meeting convened by the South Canterbury Dairy Company for last night, to give settlers in the Temuka district an opportunity of hearing Mr J. R. Scott, secretary of the National Dairy Association, speak on the subject of dairying, with special reference to the establishment of creameries, etc., in South Canterbury, was adjourned sine die, owing to the paucity of attendance. Only some ten persons were present at the Town Hall, and of these but one-half could have had a personal interest in the question. Mr Scott was accompanied by Mr A. C. Thompson, of Albury Park, chairman of the provisional directors of the company, who expressed regret at the small attendance, which he attributed partly to lack of interest and partly to the weather. He suggested the adjournment of the meeting, but intimated that Mr Scott would willingly give any information on the subject matter for which the meeting had been called. A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs Scott and Thompson for their attendance, after which a few of those present had a brief conversation as to the advantages of dairying on the lines proposed by the S.C Company. A farther opportunity will be given of hearing Mr Scott in Tunaru to-day. SYNOPSIS OF ADVERTISEMENTS. Upper Waitohi—Social in Schoolroom on July 26th. Wesleyan Church, Temuka—Services for Sunday. W.
