Temuka Borough Council.

A special meeting of the Temuka Borough Council was held on Thursday night. Present—His worship the Mayor (Major Hayhurst), in tho chair, and Councillors Henry, Prcddy, Cutten, Storey, Frew, ftJcOaskill, Carr, Buxton. I The Mayor stattd that tho special business for the evening was the striking of the r.V-'s for the year. Hu also had uatiQ-d that any general basil css c mid be dealt with. He held Council or Cronin’s re.-ignation, which would have to bo dealt with by tho clerk as returning officer. KATE. Councillor Cutten moved—“ That a general rale l£d in the £ be struck o ; ail rateable property in the Temuka district, and a special night soil rate of yd of r. penny in tho £ on all rateable property in the Temuka west district of tho borough, both rates to 'no pay = Ijl-; in cue sum on the Ist July, 1901.” oeoon dod by Councillor Frew, and carried REVELS, ETC Tho question of taking levels of the eiat section of the borough was consHlered, and it was resolved on the motion of Councillor Cutten and Henry —“ Thai tho street levels iu the eastern district bo taken at once, and that Messrs Moaaon and March, int I e instructed to do the wot kas soon as possible at tho price quoted in their letter of 22nd May, viz, £SG.” An application from Mr Arthur Story for permission to place a sign bo >rd and lamp iu front of h;n new stables in High Street was acceded to. I'.UUv AND CfcMSTEIiV BOAKUS. Mr C. Whitehead, secretasy to the Victor! i park Board and Arowheuua Cemetery Board, attended the meeting, and read the minutes of the dual meetings of those boards—both are now to be con trolled by the borough PARK BOARD. Tho Mayor suggested that it would be sufficient to hold meetings once in three mouths to deal with matters connected wit . the Park, and he thought a com mittee could be sot up to deal with general matters He pointed out the position of the Bports’ Association as connected with the Park. Iho .Association had sub.cdtuid. a curtain amount or had promised to do so, and tiu old park hoard had agree;! to subsidise this to the extent of £lO. This enabled the Association t« < have a •. arolakur f-r the cricket groan !, asphalt track, etc. The Park Board had a credit in hand of about £IOO, chi-fly dciivod from the sale of timber, and when thi.i source of revenue ceased lit>!» could bo d ;us. Tho caretaker was paid 25.! per weik with a free noose. If the contributing club; ceased to pay there would bo no provision fur the care of the spoils grounds. The board ah-mld not be asked to entrench on the accumulated fund.

Ocu ici'.lor Cu’.ten made an explanation with regard W the Sports’ Association. It was formed in 1890, at the I’ark Board could uotkeep tbo sports ground in order. Seme of the stronger clubs promised a sum of £lO each, and smaller ones from £1 to £2 ' hey approached the Park Hoard for a subsidy to make np abovr ,£MB to pay a caretaker to cut grass, maintain track, etc. The board gave the right to charge for admission on seven days, and reserved the right to let for other three days. The association had certain duties to perform. Councillor Gulden considered the oval, to say nothing of the track, was in bolter condition than ever, and it would be a pity, in f»ct a suicidal policy, if the Sports Association cam:; to the ground just us the clubs worn beginning to roup a benefit. .It would probably cost the clubs more if a per cent age on takings were charged rather than the asking < f the continuance of subscriptions, kiis remarks were merely explanatory.

After discussion it was moved by Councillor McUaskil! — “ Thnt Mr Mstson bo re-appointed caretaker at the same salary as heretofore.” Seconded by Councillor Frew, and carried.

Councillor Frow moved —•« That the council grant to the Sports’ Ass iciation the same privileges as it received from tho late I’nik Hoard.” Seconded by Councillor S tory, and carried.

Councillor Culteu moved and Councillor iMcCaokill seconded—“ That a committee consisting or the .Mayor, CVmncillora Buxton, Frew, and MaC..akili, be appointed to draw lip by laws for (ho government of tho Trmuka Park, and to report to next meeting.”—Carri'd. Councillor Henry move- —"That a committee bo appointed, to consist of the .Mayor Councillors Buxton and Cutteu, to take into considerati m the working of the Park.” Seconded by Councillor McCaskill- and agreed to. Councillor Cutteu made a preliminary objection, which was over-ruled, that the appointment of a committee put the matter in the form of a Park Board again. It was resolved that the committee meet quarterly, also that cheques be signed by the chairman and Councillor* Cullen and Buxton. It was resolved to publish synopsis of balance-sheet iu local piper. The Board’s subscription of £5 towards the Sports Association was passed for payment. CEMETERY KOABU. ?ha Mayer made a few introductory remarks, and suggested the appointment of a committee, preferably consistng of members of different denominations Councillor Buxton moved and Councillor Freddy seconded— 11 That ti»J present caretaker be re-appointed at same salary and conditions.” —Carried. Councillor Cutteu moved—“ That the Board meet quarterly on the regular Council meeting night, and that a committee, consisting of tho chairman Councillors Carr, Frew, Freddy, and Buxton, be appointed to supervise the work.” Seconded by Councillor Carr and carried. Tho chairman was empowered to approve, or otherwise, of designs for headstones. —'I hia was agreed to, as an old regulation exists, disallowing headstones (?) of wood. Councillor Floury made some suggestions with regard to a few improvements to the cemetery grounds. Some ornamental planting on tho borders would give pleasure. It was resolved that tho chairman and Councillors Frew and Buxton sign cheques. It was resolved that some repairs recommended by the old Board be ellected to tho house.

The meeting then terminated with a vote of thunks to the Mayor.
