Rangitata Debating Society.

The opening meeting of the Kangitata Debating Society was held on Tuesday evening. Mr J. Stanger occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance, over thirty persons being present, including a number of ladies. The chairman, in his opening remarks, referred to the important events that had happened since the society had last met —the war, the new century, the death of the Queen, and the visit of the Duke of York. In connection with the latter, he deplored the lavishness of the reception that was being given, and maintained that the money could be spent in a better way. Needless to say, this opinion was warmly combatted by some of the members, a hot debate ensuing. A couple of songs were then given by Miss L. Coulter and another. The debate for the evening was “Should we adopt the freehold system in New Zealand ?” A contributed paper was read by the secretary, Mr A. Mahan, dealing with the subject in favor of the freehold system. The views of the writer were supported by Messrs Dorward, Mahan, L. Ellis, and Irwin, whilst Messrs Gregan and Webb argued for the leasehold system. A vote showed that the majority wore in favor of the freehold system. Although members are allowed to speak only once on the subject, provision is made that any member can ask another a question at the conclusion. This rule was largely made use of on Tuesday night, a number of questions being asked by different members. It was agreed that part of the jirogramme next evening should be an impromptu vote of thanks. A paper will also be read by Mr E. Ellis on ‘ The best method of civilising the dark races of the globe.”
