The Bank of England’s returns published to-day show the stock of gold coin and bullion to bo £32,244,000 ; reserve, £23,270,000 ; proportion of reserve to liabilities, 43.G9 ; notes in circulation, £29,044,000 ; public deposits, £6,605,000; other deposits, £40,403,000; Government securities, £13,758,000 ; other securities, £33,971,000. Throe months’ bills are discounted at 3 13-16 per cent.

The wheat markets are dull, tending downwards. Business iu cargoes is quiet. New South vVales, April shipment, is quoted at 29s Gd; South Australian, January shipment, 30s, aud B’ebruary, 39s 9d. For New Zealand cargoes, off coast, 29s Cd is asked. At the wool sales Bradford tops are firm. Common sixties, 18|; super, Tho Loudon sales are firm aud there is good competition. The Tenakoe and Abundance clip sold at and Brancopoth at Gd. The American visible wheat supply is estimated tit 58,941,000 bushels. At ilia wool sales an inferior selection was offered, aud prices are unchanged. The Taipo clip sold at la 3d, Keraru 4Jd. At the tallow sales 1000 casks were offered, and 1050 casks were sold. Brices— Mutton, fine, 28s 3d ; medium, 20s. Beef, lino, 2Gs 9d ; medium, 25a Gd. The experimental shipment of Victorian pears and grapes was a failure. Tho bulk of the fruit was rotten. May 19. Wool met a spirited sale, and prices tiro firm. Tho Otaio clip sold at Cj-d. 'Tho quantity catalogued to date is 214,212 bales; sold 196,830 bales. Meluoukne, May 17. The Government are invi iug tenders for £500,000 3 per cent, debentures. The minimum is fixed at 9G, and the loan will have a currency of 29 years.
