Strike at the Westport Mines.
Westport, January 26. ' The truckers in the Westport Coal Company's Denniston mine struck for an in- ( •' crease of Is per day. The wages they are at , present receiving are Ss and 9s. The rope ] : ' and road boy 3, whose wages range from 3s 6d up, also struck for an increase. A 2 number of machine boys, who are getting r 5s 6d and 6s 6d, also ceased work, claiming £ increase to 7s 6d, but some restarted. It is asserted that the miners committed a breach ( of industrial agreement in refusing to truck when called on. The men stopped entirely , yesterday, but a portion are working under difficulties to-day. The wages of the c truckers and other youths and boys are ) settled in the industrial agreement, and the strike is a blow at the efficacy of the law. , Great inconvenience is caused to shipping, ' several large steamers being delayed. The '. company is advertising for young men and * boys. It is understood that the Union £ authorities disapproved of the action of the strikers.
