From the Transvaal.
The following verses forwarded fx-om South Africa to a friend in Ternuka by Mr 1). Fraser have been handed to us for publication ; TO ALL.Away, far away to the Golden AVest, Our ship is sailing fast; To where bugles call, where brothers fall, Before the cannon's blast. But here all is quiet and peaceful, And the moon is clear and bright; As I pace my beat with weary feet, And think of the days gone bye. With the angry ocean round me, Tossing its feathery foam ; In the loneliness of the midnight hour I think of those at home. Of friends, parents, brothers, and sisters, In the place where I was born ; And all those dear hearts that loved me, Who I haveJeft to mourn. Feel not of grief ancPsorrow, Nor needless tears of pain ; For soon will come the morrow, When we shall meet again. By looking at trials and dangers, Only sorrow and grief is found ; Just think of the joy to receive your boy, With honour and glory crowned. Then all will be happy and peaceful, Foud parents will grieve no more ; For life will seem a glorious dream, When the wanderer returns from the war.
