There were only 50 bankruptcies in Wellington during the year, which is the same number as in 1898. [ ; A Wellington resident has received a letter from a friend in Auckland stating that he had never known influenza to be so prevalent in the latter city, nor so virulent, as it is at present. In one large factory so many of the hands were laid up last week that it was found impossible to carry on operations for two or three days, and iu another establishment twenty out of fifty employees were absent at one time In several cases deaths have occurred. At the inquest at Tapanui touching the death of Jane Haugh, who was found in a dying condition iu a hut close to her father’s residence, suffering from a ballot wound, the evidence showed that the carbine was usually kept iu one of the bunks slung to the wall by two leather straps. The brother of deceased on returning home about 10 p.m. first hoard of the accident. He examined the oarbine, extracted the cartridge case, and poured some oil down the barrel. He did not want his mother to discover that the rifle was the'eause of his sisters death. It did not occur to him to leave the rifle as ho found it. Constable, Matheson in his evidence said that a boy, aged five years, stated that he and his young sister had been playing with the carbine, which they left on the bed. The jury returned a verdict that death was accidental. An Epidemic op Diakrhcea. Mr A. Sanders, writing- from Cocoanut Grove, Fla., says there has been quite an epidemic of diarrhoea there. He had-a severe attack and was cured by four doses, of Chamberlain’s Colie, Cholera, and niarrluca Remedy.
