Telegraphic News.

[From Oub Own Cokbesi'Ondent]. Wellington, Oct. IS. The appointments to the Legislative Council created little surprise. Mr MoCullough was one of the most consistent supporters of the Government, and why he was overlooked no one can understand. Mr Richardson, too, was as good if not a better Government supporter than <YTr Montgomery, yet he was overlooked. Mr MacGregor refued to accept re-appoint-ment. The probabilities are, however, that both Messrs Kichardson aud MeCullough will be reappointed before long. There is que thing the appointments prove, and that is that slavish submission to the will of the Premier is not all, dospite what some may say. Three of those appointed gave their last throe votes ag.unst the Government before their time expired, and tho first vote two of them gave after being reappointed was against the Government, That shows that Government supporters have any liberty they like to claim.

The Millers' Hours Labour Bill and Police Provident Fund Bill passed through the Council to day.

The Government Accident Insurance Bill passed its second reading in the Council.' The House of Representatives met at noon to-day, and has been engaged since on the Public Worka Estimates, but slow progress has been made. Parliament is bound to close on Saturday night. Great preparations are being made to 'give the Transvaal Contingent a splendid send-off. They are invited to tho theatre, Women' Political dance, and so on, and there will be a great demonstration on Saturday. There are some good stories about as to some of the tests as to fitness they wore put through. Two men were rejected because the expert considered they could not ride well enough, but when it turned out that they were both professional horse-breakers, the expert did not feel very proud of himself, aad they were ( allowed, to go, : • I
