TEMUKA STOCK SALE. The entry of sheep at the Temuka Yards on Tuesday was the largest for some mouths. Owing to wet weather they did not show to advautage. The market was topped with some freezing wethers, which realised 16s. Store cattle was not in request, and but little beef was yarded. PLEASANT POINT SALE. Considering the wretched unsettled weather that has occurred lately, almost completely disorganising farming operations, the entry of sheep which came forward at the Pleasant Point stock sale on Monday was very good indeed. The demand was fair, and the sale as a whole was considered satisfactory. The principal item of interest in the grain trade during the past few days has been the sailing of the steamer Ardandearg for Las Palmas with 141,780 bushels of wheat, of which about half was loaded at Timaru and the balance at Lyttelton. The departure of so large a cargo, with a couple of ships still loading for London, has had the effect of steadying the local wheat market slightly, so far as holders are concerned, but with the continued depression in the London market speculators are holding off, and, beyond a few small sales of Pearl and Tuscan at 2s 2Jd at country stations, and Hunter’s at 2s Id, no business has been passing. Virtually nothing has been doing in either oats or barley. A little inquiry has been experienced for prime parcels of oatsheaf chaff at 35s at country stations for local consumption. The latent news from Sydney is to the effect that the market there for New Zealand potatoes had collapsed, and they were hard to dispose of at from 30s to 32s 6d per ton, while the market was glutted. Buyers here are only offering 10s per ton, and even at that price they are not anxious to purchase, as they can see no immediate prospect of an outlet. Holders of onions in several instances are declining to take 40s per ton, which is the best price offering, and are now shipping on their own account. If the consignments do not prove better keepers than the bulk of those which have gone to Sydney previously this season, they will find some difficulty in disposing of their shipments there.
