London, uly 25. Count Esterha/.y, who is at present in England, returns to France under safe conduct to give evidence at the Dreyfus trial at Rennes. Paths, July 20 M. Gallifethas removed General Xogrier from the Supreme Council of War because, in the presence of four army corps commanders, he accused the Government of reluctance to defend the army, adding that after the Rennes trial the army would summon the Government to do their duty. If they failed to do so “ we will act/’ M. Beaurepairo complaints that the president of the Court-martial treated him as a mere busybody. There are seventy witnesses for the prosecution, including five War Ministers. Paris, July .26. General Pelouse, brigade commander of the llt'n Army Corps, Department of the Rhone, has also boon removed to the command of a brigade in Brittany. The Nationalist papers protest that General Pelouso’a and General Negrier’s disgrace is intended to intimidate the Rennes Courtmartial. General Negrier has been sent to the Inspection Department. His removal caused a sensation. Captain Dreyfus is sull’ering from malarial fever. July 27. M. Ma/.ean, first President of the Court of Cassation, assured M. Loubotthat there was no evidence of Captain Dreyfus’ guilt, but the strongest presumption of his innocence. The French national papers were furious at General Nogriur’s disgrace, and declared that M. Gallifet was beheading the army. The Radical and Socialist organs commend his firmness. The now French battleship Suffren, the largest battleship yet constructed, has been successfully launched. The vessel was only 190 days on the stocks. Her displacement is 12,(151 tons ; she is of 15,500 horsepower, and her speed is 18 knots.
