A SERIOUS CHARGE

An affair which might have had a serious termination, occurred in Chester Street, Eaßt Chriatchurch on, Thursday night. On Mouday,' a woman named Kate Anderson was successful in proceedings in the Supreme Court which she inititnted against her brother, George Andersou, to obtaiu possession of a house in Linwood, Another brother, James Andersou, who was a witness far the defence, sent a message to his sister that he wished her to meet him at the house of her brother-in-law, James King, at No. 16, Chester Street, at 7.30 p.m. yesterday. Having received a wainiDg that her brother meant mischief, she did not keep the appointment, and Mr King arranged with the police to be on hand. From Mr King's statement, it appears that at the appointed time James Anderson entered the house by the front door, which was open, and walked into the kitchen, where Mr aud MrsJiihg and the family were at tea. He asked for his sister Kate, and was told that she was out. He said that he must see her that night, and Mr Kiug, being auspicious, went outside on the pretence of calling Kate in, aud returned with Constable Dalston. Anderson was then seen to be pointing a revolver at Mrs King, and informing her that he intended to shoot her and her sister Kate, and then himself, Tho Coustable at onco Beized him aud disarmed him, and took him to the lock-up. The revolver, which wa3 a new one, was found to be fully charged. Anderson, who is a groom in the.employ of Dr Cooke, of Lincoln, is thirty-eight years of age, and is a powerfully built man. He will be brought bafore the court on Friday morning, charged with using threatening lauguage and poiutiug a loaded revolved at Mrs King.—Lyttelton Times.
