CRICKET.

CANTERBURY v. OTAGO,

Christchurch, Feb. 25,

The thirty-sixth iuterprovincial cricket match, Ufcago v. Canterbury, started thia afternoon at Lancaster Park. Each side had won 17 matches, and one game had been drawn, and as a consequence of tho equality of the rocorda a good deal of interest attached to the game. The weather was fine, clear, and sunny, but tho recent heavy raina had greatly deadened the ground and the wicket, although the latter had been aomewhat protected by tarpaulins, Canterbury won the toss and sent Otago in, and so well did Malone and North bowl that the innings was rapidly finished for a total of 68—Downes 17 and Baker 11 being top scorers. Maloue took 7 wickets for 30 runs. The wicket of course was iu favor of the bowlers, who could get a spin ou easily, but for all that more runs should have been made. Canterbury batted on a wicket somewhat improved but still soft, and at the call of time had scored 88 for the loss of three wickets DeMaua playing masterly cricket for 50, not out, Clark 22 not out, and Wheatley 12. The attendance was about 700.

The first innings of Canterbury closed on Friday for J GO, of which Do Mans contributed 76, and Clarke 40. Iu their second innings Otago made a better start, having only lost 2 wickets for 100 shortly before 5 o'clock, Baker being not out with 50.
