S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting of the above was h«ld yesterday. Present —Messrs W. B. Howell (chairman), J. Talbot, P. Keddie, J. Jackson, and W. M. Moore, and Rev. G. Barclay. Apology was made for Mr Salmond. Mr Moore stated that Mr Salmond said that he would be obliged to resign unless the day of meeting were altered. chairman's statemsnt. The chairman welcomed Mr Jacksou back to his seat at the board's table. Enquiry had been made regarding the building graut, but telagraphic reply showed that the Parliamentary vote had not been allocated. COMMITTEES. On the motion of the Rev. Mr Barclay and Mr Keddio, the chairman, Messrs Gray, .Salmond, and Barclay wore appointed a Scholarships Committee, Mr Barclay to be convenor. On the motion of the Rev. Mr Barclay, seconded by Mr Moore, the chairman, and Messrs Keddie, Tnlbot, Jackson, and mover were appointed a Building Committee, the chairman to be couveuor. CIRCULARS. Circulars were received from the Department, (1) concerning amendments in the examination regulations; aud (2) asking for information regarding requirements of schools in village settlements. The former was referred to the inspector ; the information aske 1 for by the latter had been sent. Longmans & Co. forwarded specimens of wall sheets connected with their " Ship Readers," and Brown & Poison a box of samples showiug the steps of manufacture of corn flour from the cob. Thoy offered to supply a similar box to any school asking for it. Members admired both specimens, but as to the latter a fear was expressed that if the board accepted one such advertisement the schools would be flooded with exhibits by other manufacturers. INSPECTOR'S REPORTS. Examination reports were submitted by the Inspector on the Timaru Main and Timaru South Schools, Cauuiugton, Waitohi Flat, and Raugitira Valley. a vacant seat. The secretary stated that there were three nominations for the vacancy caused by the death of Mr Soddon—Rev. W. J. Comrie, Mr W. Kellend, and Mr R. H. Rhodes. The nominations to be sent to the committee foi thoir votes. TAROKRA SCHOOL. Mr A. H. Abbott, chairman oi a meeting of shareholders at Pareora, forwarded a series of resolutions expressive of entire uoulidenco in the head teacher. —The chairman of the committoo, to whom a copy of the resolutions had boen sent, wrote a long reply to them. Ho enclosed i a notice from live parents of 21 children, that thoy would withdraw three children, unless they were assured of a change of teacher; and a notice from the parents of 20 children, asking for a change.—A reply to the " charges," occupying 20 sheets of foolscap, was received from the master. — The board arrived at a decision to be communicated to the teacher and committee. COMMITTEES' CORRESPONDENCE. The dispute between the board aud the Waimato Committee and High School Governors as to the appointment of the extra teacher was to have been further diseussod, but as some members ware away and others desired to got away, the question was postponed. Gapes' Valley reported, as requested, the result of the polling ;it the election of the committee.—Mt Moore said thore was a further complication. Another person, who had not been named to the board before, claimed to be a member of Iho committee because ho was oloctod by the committee to Jill a vacancy, but the chairman ignored this election and himself put in the person who had stood next on the poll. Last week the committoo elected another person in place of a third who was said to bo disqualified to sit, as ho was not living in the district. —The whole thing was tied up in a most complicated knot.—lt was resolved that Major Moore bo requested to meet the committee and bring a suggestion for the settlement of the dispute.

The head master of the Wai-iti school wroto resigning his position. Waitohi Flat asked for new water tanks, those they had being " done," and the children have uo water. —It was moved that Mr Talbot interview the committee, and see if something cannot be done with the water-race that runs through the ground. The board went into committee on appointments for Station Creek and Hazelburn. DAY OF MEKTING. Major Moore gave notice to move that the day of meeting be changed.
