ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

A meeting of the council of the above society was held on Thursday afternoon at the Roys! Hotel, Temuka. Present— Messrs E. Richardson (chairman), C. N. Macintosh, W. G, Aspinall, M. J. Kuubley, F. Palliser, K. McQueen, W. Grant, and Geo. Philips. Apologies were received from Messrs Langdon, Perry, and Hayes. Mr Langdon wrote suggesting the propriety of the council getting a net made similar to the shrimping nets, so that it could be used for removing fish from small holes. This led to a general discussion as to nets, and it was resolved that Messrs Palliser and Macintosh arrange for the purchase at Timaru of a suitable net to be used in the Pareora, and that Mr Aspinall and the secretary procure locally another drag net, and the net suggested by Mr Langdon. Messrs W. O. Mackay, Alex Bissett, James Hay, and T. Palmer were nominated and elected members of the society, and the secretary was instructed to apply to have Mr McKay, Mr T. Priest (Pareora) and Mr A. Bissett, appointed honorary rangers under the Fisheries Conservation and Animals Protection Acts.

The report cf the head ranger was received. The rivers generally were in fair condition, and fair sport had been obtained with the fly, in the Temuka river especially. The Opihi bar was still partly blocked, and it would be impossible to open a good mouth until the shingle had banked up. Ha forwarded a list of takes made during the mon h. He recommended issuing free licenses to tho police at Temuka, who had always assisted him when called upon. The sub-ranger at Orari-Winchester also submitted his report on work done, etc.

A discussion ensued as to the granting of licenses to the police. Against the i proposal it was urged that it was the duty of the police to assist in securing tho conviction of poachers, and that if licenses were issued at Temuka the police at other ' places would also demand the same privilege. Mr W. Grant moved—“ That licenses bo issued free to the police at Temuka, Geraldine, Point, and Fairlie.” Mr Phillips seconded the motion, which, on being put to the meeting, was lost. Tiie secretary was instructed to arrange that tho head ranger superintend the opening of tho lagoon bar, and have powor to employ labor. Tho secretary reported that about 180 licenses hud been issued to date. It was agreed to rodeposit £IOO for twelve mouths at the Bank of New Zealand. Sundry accounts wero passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
