VOLCANIC DISTURBANCE AT SAMOA.
Auckland, Feb. 1. News from Samoa, dated January 11th, reports an alarming volcanic disturbance in the group on Christmas day. Native reports from Tutuila Btate the the eruption took place in the Faleiua district. Twenty people lost their lives by being buried iu ; the falling ashes, but there are no further details. At Fagaloa the harbour waters were agitated by a submarine force, and stones, ashes, and water wore thrown into the air. A heavy earthquake occurred, and the waters of the bay were very hot. It is reported that smoke issued from a hill at the back of Fagaloa harbour. Feb. 2. The Herald's Samoa correspondent writes that the earthquake on Christmas Day did much damage. At one place a stouo church w,as thrown down. The Catholie Church ou the Vala Mountain, just behind Apia, was much injured. Wooden buildings swayed to and fro iu a most alarming manner, and a number of stone fences were levelled to the ground. Nothiug so sovoro has been experienced there within the memory of tho natives or Europeans.
