THE AUSTRALIAN TARIFFS.

Sydney, June 4. In the Assembly the Premier introduced a resolution to give effect to the alterations in the tariff foreshadowed in the Budget, The duty on butter is reduced from 2d to Id per lb; the duty on agricultural and dairy produce, and fish, remains till June 30th of next year. The permanent tariff fixes the duty on beer at fld to 9d per gallon ; wines 5s per gallon ; spirits 14s per gallon; tobacco 3s per lb. Sir G. R. Dibbssaid that the Opposition intended to fight every item, and dared the Government to apply the closure. He moved an amendment that the existing duties be continued till 1900. The debate is still going on. Mblboubnx, June 4. In the Assembly the Minister for Customs made a statement as to the Government proposals for alterations in the tariff. The Government were moderate protectionists, and the recommendations adopted, therefore, were not likely to interfere with established industries. The importation of priaonmade goods would be prohibited. The duty on tobacco manufactured in the colony would be raised from 6d to 9d, on cigarettes from 6d to 2s. The duty on sugar locally refined would be raised from 5s to 5s 6d; the import duty on spirits would be reduced from 15s to 13s per gallon, and excise duties on grape brandy, and malt whisky from 13b to 9s; other sorts to lis per gallon. Candles would be reduced from 2d to l£d; imported woollens to 15 per cent. The duties on machinery would also be reduced. The primage duties would be abolished on January 1. All decreases would take effect on the same date, and increases from to-morrow.
