H. H. Holmes is now in gaol at Philadelphia for crimes the story of which will take a conspicuous place in criminal history. !J e began his career twelve years ago by getting his life insured and then securing a corpse and having it identified as his own hody. From this venture he netted £2500. Since theu he has been engaged in fire insurance swindles, in fraudulent building schemes,in horse stealing ventures,in World's Fair hotel frauds, iu laud steals, in forgeries, in obtaining goods under false pretences, in dealings with women and getting their properties away from them aud then causing 'hem to disappear, in obtaining possession of houses without title and disposing of t*»em, iu building houses with other people's money, in selling bogus patents, in stealing city water and gas concessions, in starting bogus saloons and restaurants and selling their, and in marrying women aud possibly committing murder. According to his own confession he has recently been supporting no less than twenty-four different women. For a man of thirty-four years of age this is a most comprehensive record. A strange and sensational story will be developed in the course of his trial. His operations have extended to every part of the couutry, from Maine to California. He brought to his work patience, industry, skill, coolness, expert knowledge, medical and scientific attainments, intimate knowledge of human nature, and consummate audacity, which indicates a real love for the work. His career is now at an end.
