ENGLISH AND FOREIGN. London, Jan. 9. There is some straining in the diplomatic relations between France and Italy owing to the French press urging the dismissal of Signor Crispi, the Premier, and Baron Blanc. Lord Duuraven’s challenge for the America Cap is accepted. It is reported that the naval programme this year includes the construction of seven great cruisers and thirty torpedo catchers. The Sultan has applied to Lord Kimberley, Foreign Minister, to disavow Mr Gladstone’s speech to the Armenian delegates which has fairly infuriated the Turkish Government. Jan. 10. Armenians resident in Paris welcomed with enthusiasm Mr Gladstone, who is en route to Cannes. The Earl of Kimberley, in reply to the demand of the Porte, informed the Sultan that Mr Gladstone’s speech was not official. The Loudon Anarchists discovered that one of their comrades was a French spy, and forced him to reveal the intentions of the French Government at the muzzle of a revolver. Paris, Jan. 8. M. Brisson was re-elected President of the Chamber of Deputies by a majority of 272. The police at Marseilles searched the houses of several financiers, and inspected the books of various Credit Companies in search of evidence in the South of France Railway case. It is alleged that several incriminating documents were seized. Constantinople, Jan. 8, The Turkish authorities allege that they have seized a quantity of seditious pamphlets and materials the Armenians intended to use in an extensive scheme of arson. Thursday Island, Jan. 9. A serious fight has taken place between Japanese and Kanakas. A number of the former were severely knocked about. Rio db Janbrio, Jan. 10. The local steamer refused to assist the victims on a burning harbour boat, fearing that they might catch fire themselves. The passengers compelled the captain to proceed on his way under pain of being shot.
