The Legion of Honor has summoned M. Herz to answer the charges of complicity in the Panama frauds.
The Chamber of Deputies are discussing the advisability of taking special powers to deal with the crisis.
M. Cambour has been definitely appointed to succeed M. Waddington as Ambassador to England.
Jan. 18
The Public Prosecutor, at the close of the case for the defence, demanded that sentence be passed on the Panama Canal defendants forthwith. The total amount squandered by the directors is now put down at 600,000,000 francs.
Jan. 19
In the case against the Panama Canal directors, the Public Prosecutor made severe strictures on the conduct of M. Eiffel, and demanded that all the defendants should be imprisoned without the option of a fine, contending the infliction, of a fine would not be a sufficient punishment for such wholesale swindling as had been perpetrated by the accused.
A bank clerk informed the Panama Canal Enquiry Committee that the lists supplied by Baron Reinach and M. Clemenceau of members of the Chamber of Deputies, who had been bribed, were similar. M. Clemenceau denied this. Three hundred cheques, involving persons bribed by M. Artois, have been discovered in the bank.
