Newcastle, Jan. 17.

Mr Steel, lirst mate of the barque Annie Stafford, had an altercation with a negro sailor, who was was working aloft, and running up the rigging collared the man. It is alleged that the negro drew a knife to defend himself, and Seel seeing this struck him a terrific blow with the staysail sheet block, hurling him to the deck. The negro died shortly afterwards. Seel, who has been arrested, is believed to be a man who was recently acquitted at Wellington, New Zealand, on a charge of inciting Finley in connection with the Waterloo Quay a Gray, in which the sailor Greenrose met his death. At the inquest the coroner’s jury brought in a verdict of manslaughter against Seel.
