WOODBURY SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of the above committee was held on the 27th of August. Present —Messrs Brown (chairman), Dean, Flatman, Fifield, Hammond, and Cormack. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read— From the Board of Education, requesting the committee to nominate a pnpil teachor.—lt was resolved to nominate Miss Cormack. From the same, notifying that £4l2s 6d had been placed in the bank to the credit of the committee ; also that Miss Fifield had been appointed school mistress in the place of Miss Williamson (resigned). report. The inspector's report, dated July 27th, 1892, was received, which was as follows : I,—(a) Staff: Head teacher, Joseph Greaves, Dl; assistant, Isab. Williamson, D 4 ; pupil teacher (fourth year), Amy E. Fifield, E (partial). (b) Attendance : On roll, 101 ; average attendance last quarter, 73 ; present, 88. (c) Classes : Standard VII., boys 0, girls 3; Standard VI, boys 6, girls 2; Standard V., boys 6, girls 3 ; Standard IV., boys 11, girls 4 ; Standard 111., boys G, girls 9 ; Standard 11., boys 7, girls 4 ; Standard 1., boys 7, girls 7 ; P., boys 10, girls 1G ; totals, boys 53, girls 48. ((/) Distribution of work : Mr Greaves takes Standards IV. to VII.; Miss Williamson, Standards 111., 11., and P2; Miss Fifield, Standard 1., PI, and P 3. (<■) Groupings: CJasses Standards IV. to VI. (girls), for domestic economy; Standards IV. to IV., for science; Standards 11. and 111., for object lessons : P. and Standard 1., for object lessons; Standards IV. and V., for history. ll—Remarks on 1., b : For six months past the attendance has been ail'ected by sickness prevailing in the district. IV.—Methods, etc. : I found Mr Greaves at his post, and, as usual, putting his whole heart and strength into the work. His pupils appear to catch the earnest spirit of their master, and they do all their lessons with thoroughness and intelligence. In Miss Williamson's room very good order is maintained; the children are attentive; their work is neat and careful; and but for some weakness in reading their work generally is of good quality. In the annual examinations of pupil teachers Miss Fifield has always held a conspicuous place, and for one so young she shows good teaching power. V.—Order and discipline : Very good. Vl.—Manners, etc : Very good. Vll.—Buildings, etc.: The buildings have been repaired and painted. It is to be regretted that the walls and ceilings of the rooms were not washed while the other work was in progress. Jas. Gibson Gow, m.a., Inspector. master's report.

The attendance at the school is imimproving. The attendance for the month shows : Boys, 49 ; girls, 41; total, 90. Admissions : Boys, 3 ; girls, 3; total, 6. Withdrawals : Boys, 1. Number on roll: Boys, 56; girls, 50 ; total, 106. Repairs are required to the swing ropes. The division fence behind the school is totally decayed.—The chairman to apply to the Board of Education for a special grant for the same. On the motion of Mr Flatman, seconded by Mr Dean, the chairman and one member were deputed to inspect the dividing fence, and on the motion of Mr Hammond, seconded by Mr Cormack, it was resolved that the repairs be attended to. VISITORS. Messrs Dean and Gick were appointed visitors for the ensuing month. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £2 17s 6d were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
