SUSPENSION OF A BANK. Lon June 8. The new Oriental Bank suspended payment at 6 o’clock to-night. An official circular lias been issued, stating that the suspension of the Bank was owing to the depreciation of silver, the increasing distrust in Great Britain of investments of the silver currency countries, tho withdrawal of capital, and lastly tho unprecedented condition of trade with China, Japan, and Australia, and the hurricane in the Mauritus. Steps have been taken to protect the assets. It is unofficially staled that the Bank of England has refused assistance because the securities are of a character not easily liquidated. The liabilities of the new Oriental Bank amount to £7,250,000 exclosive of the paid up capital. The directors hope to bo able to pay the debts of the bank in full and resuscitate the affairs of tho institution if the depositors accept 5 per cent, preference shares. Sydney, June 9. The local branch of the new Oriental Bank suspended payment this afternoon. The last returns show that the Sydney deposits amount to £247,000, the total liabilities being £248,000, while the assets amount to £418,000. Tho returns from the Victorian branch show the deposits to be £57,000, total liabilities £61,000, and assets £477,000.
