Leonard Tombs, charged with having allowed his chimney to be on fire, pleaded guilty. Constable Egan deposed to having seen flames issue from the chimney, but only for one instant. Mr Tombs said he believed it occurred through the servant lighting the fire with kerosene.

The casi appeared to be the result of an accidem and he would dismiss it. NEGLECTED CHILDREN. Colin and Joseph Bryant were broughi up charged with being neglected children William Bryant, a brother of the children, said their father was dead, then mother had gone to live with a man at Oran, and he, witness, had no place to keej them. He was willing to pay 8s per week for them in the Industrial School. In answer to the Court he said the children were aged 8 and 11 years respectively, that they were taken to Orari by their mother and kept there for a time, after which she turned them away and they came down to Temilka. As he had no home of his own he could not look after them.
His Worship said it was a pity to send them to the Industrial School, where they would have to associate with criminal children. He would adjourn the case, and try to find out whether he could make some arrangement with the Charitable Aid Board to do something in the way of boarding them out. If not, he would have to send them to the Industrial School. The Court then adjourned.
