Hope, on behalf of himself and other?, that the survey of the downs be extended so as to include their properties back of Timaru, south of the Washdyke Valley.—Engineer to make the flying surveys asked for. A petition was received from a number of ratepayers in the Otipua, Beaeonsfield, and Kingsdown districts asking the council to form their properties into a water-supply district.— Mr Marchant said he had already examined the ground and found that it was perfectly feasible to supply the district with water from the Pareora river.—lt, was resolved that the engineer be instructed to make a survey to ascertain the area capable of being benefited by the water-race .applied for by the petitioners, and give an estimate of the cost of the work. Mr W. Postlethwaite wrote asking to have a further piece of his estate — Raukapuka, 603£ acres—included in the Orart-Waihi water-supply district. —Two petitions were received for the extension of this district —one from 17 residents of Orari settlement and the other from the trustees of the Geraldine racecourse. —It was also stated that the residents of Tetnuka desired to be supplied by a race from Orari, via Winchester. —Mr Postlethwaite waited on the council and conferred with them at length. He explained that he desired to have the tail water from one of the Orari-Waihi branches asheretofore, and he was willing to pay £25 a year for it until the 503 acres he had written about could be added to the water district, which at the present rate of charge would be about £21,; but he must be assured that;Jthe council would protect him by preventing the use of the Water for inigation by persons above him. He offered,, no objection to the water being taken after passing his house for the supply of the Orari settlement, and he believed it could easily be taken there. He would, however, object to any further inclusion of his lands in the rated district, as he bad plenty of water. —Engineer to report in re the.possibility of supplying the Orari Petitioners. Mr A. M. Clark wrote protesting against the valuation of a section rated for water. —Keply to be sent that the council regret that they cannot alter the valuation. Mr Henry Woodley asked for a branch race from the Rangitata series —Engineer to attend to it, The Levels Road Board wrote re race crossings on roads, naming four of the deadown crossings which required amendment, and suggesting that the engineer should consult their overseer in making crossings in future. —The engineer to see to the four crossings complained of. An opinion was received from the council’s solicitor respecting the powers of the council in the matter of enlarging a water-supply district, the occasion for the enquiry being the wish lo enlarge the Waitohi district. It was unnecessary, he advised, to take a poll of the ratepayers if the amount of the loan was not altered Mr White also reported the successful, prosecution of an offender for tampering with a water-race. BRIDGES The engineers reported on hr dges as follaws “ G raldine bridge repairs —The timber for this work is now on the ground. The contractor purposes pushing on with it without delay the plans ready for this contract Before calling for tenders we wished the council’s consent to a modification of the plan originally authorised.”— Tbepoqucil declined to consent to the proposed modification to widen bridge about a foot, as it would doubtless be broken down by p-neona taking drays over it. 'he engineer was authorised to call for tenders for the work.—The clerk to the Geraldine Road Board drew, attention to the delapitated slate of the Orfl.yi traffic bridge, and asked if the council were prepared to bold themselves liable ftv the consequences of an accident. —Mr Barker said there was no avoiding the bridge, as the crossings were fenced off. Howell proposed to close the bridge except for stock, a ford crossing ito be trade on on® aide ° r other, It would cost £l2 000 to repaid ft, and the traffiic did not warrant it —Mr Barker said there was a good dpal of timber traffic from Mount Feel oyer Lhe bridge.
