AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Arowhenus Town Board was held last night. Present —Messrs B. Lee (chairman), E. Brown, and A. Frew. COEBEBEONDINCB. The following correspondence was received:— From the Controller and AuditorGeneral, covering a certified copy of the balance-sheet of the board. Frm the Colonial Secretary’s Office enclosing resolution moved by Mr Perceval, M.H.R., asking for return of the number of local bodies, their income and cost of management.—-The clerk to attend to the matter.

The overseer’s report was read and dealt with as follows :

To the Chairman and Commissioners Arowhenua Town Board.

Gentleman, —I have the honor to report that since last meeting the contractor for cleaning water-tables, having duly signed the authorised agreement, commenced work, and has now neatly completed the first trimming of the water-tables on the schedule! He has in addition to this cleaned 35 chains not included, and effected some repairs in Studholme Street. The work is being carried out in a very satisfactory manner. In accordance with instructions, tenders have been invited for the supply of footpath shingle. A portion of the footpath in Denmark Street fronting Mr Matson’s sections will require to be lowered. I would suggest that this be done by the surface man and arrangements made with the successful contractor for the shingling to cart any soil removed. The crossings at the junctions of Gamack and Maude Streets require immediate attention. I would suggest that a pipe culvert be put in at the latter street, as originally intended. There would then be a good metalled road open for heavy traffic to the railway station. The crossing at Gamack Street could be much improved with a few loads of heavy metal until such time as the street is shingled, when a culvert could be put in. 1 desire to draw the attention of the board to the practice of carters and others taking their drays upon the footpaths, and also t® the necessity of some definite resolution being made as to crossings to private seel ions. No notice having been taken by Mr Marshall of the board’s resolution re removal of gorse, I have had the same dona by day labor at bis coat. Mr Russell, on receipt of notice, grubbed the gorse fronting sections in his occupation Studholme Street. I would suggest that the handrails of footbridges be painted white, as at night people using them complain that the positions of the bridges are not readily discernible. There is an excavation upon the £ chain road leading to Bobbs’ footbridge which will require filling in as the sections on each side are now fenced, and the hollow occupies the whole width of the road. It was resolved that the overseer attend to the painting of handrails as suggested, and have the excavation on road to Hobbs’ bridge filled. He was also instructed to have a pipe culvert put in at Maude street, and improve the crossing at Gamack street, also to make arrangements as suggested for carting soil from footpath in Denmark street. He was authorised to procure a road rake and have ruts filled in Denmark and Wilkin streets. The action of the overseer re removal of gorse was confirmed. CASTING ON FOOTPATHS. The clerk was instructed, when necessary, to draw the attention of the police to the breaches of the Police Offences Act caused by carting over footpaths. TENDBEO. Two tenders were received for footpath shingle: P. 0* Mara, Is Id per yard ;J T. Davis, lOd per yard (accepted). BATE. On the motion of Mr Frew, seconded by Mr Brown, it was resolved—“ That it is the intention of the board at a special meeting te be held on Saturday, August 30th, to strike a rate of id in the £ on all rateable property in the Arowhenua Town District.” ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £3 8s were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
