Sir, —I have the honor to report for the, past month as follows Contract No. 20, cleaning drain, White’s road, has been completed and passed for payment.—l have let the cleaning of the Canal drain, applied for by Messrs Ward and Prattloy,. Grant, and Woodhead, to 0. McAuliffe at ,1s 3d per chain, and he has made good, 1 progress with tha work.—Re road applied for by Mr Lawler : There are seventeen, chains in the length Mr Lawlor applied to have formed, and it could be done in a similar manner to what has been already done, viz., by cutting a ditch on the upper side of the road reserve. The coat i should not exceed that already done, which was a little over per chain. The, remainder of the road is of a yory peaty nature, and is about 76 chains in length. To form this portion of the road it would be necessary to cut a ditch en each side of the road reserve, and as nothing but peat could be obtained therefrom a coat of clay or shingle would be required before wheeled traffic could use the road. The cost of cutting the drains X estimate at

per chain ; to put on clay or shingle I the cost would not be less than -—peri chain, providing the Education Board) gave the shing'o free of cost.-f-About'3ol chains of drain on the Upper Swamp! Road requires cleaning ; the cost would! be about £ —. —Since last meeting the, accounts hav» beeti audited.-—I have etc. '■ E. Aeohbr, Clerk. '! NEW' BATE. i The chairman said that the board should consider if it were now possible to reduce the annual rate. The position was now much- improved, the, past year not having been so costly, and seeing tha,t there were other local rates,to be paid it was duty, if possible, to ease the , ratepayers as much as possible. The other members concurred. It was decided to : notify in due

course-—“That:it is the intention of the board at its next meeting to strike a rate: of |d in tho £ on all rateable property in the Temuka Road Board District for the period ending March 81st, 1891, payable in one sum at the Road Board Office, Temuka, on and after July 30th, 1890.” CASTING. The oyerseer drew attention to the difficulty in hiring a. horse and dray when required. He considered; thatj although a horse "and dray could be hired, cheaply enough, yet by purchasing one the cost could be saved very soon. The overseer was instructed to make enquiries and, ascertain if a suitable horse and cart cpuld be. procured, and to report at next meeting. The meeting then terminated.
