LABOR DISPUTES.

London, May 29. There is a general movement amongst tho operatives in Government employ to form unions ior the purpose of demanding eight hours and other extensive concessions. Paris, June 1. The Government are preparing a Bill limiting the hours of operatives. Sydney, May 30. The masters in tho clothing trade have conceded their emp'ojeY demand for an increase of wages, and the threatened strike has been averted. The Marina Officers' Association here have received no officiaial information with reference to Ihe demands by the New Zealand Mercantile Marina Officers' Association, and astonishment is expressed »t the latter's attitude which is considered to bs high.handed, Wellington, May 30, Ihe demand of the Marine Associa'ion that provision should be made by steamship owners tor supplying their officers with refreshments at night is when the officers have ben working cargo at night and not when coming off duly, as first mentioned. The steamship owners have wntteu to the Association asking that as the circular contains very important demands, they should be allowed six weeks to cousHer the matter, The Association is willing to grant an extension of time, but not for the period asked. Captain Highman, Secretary of the Association, is confident of the matter being araicaby arranged. Unless a crmpromise be arrived at between the tram emplo3es and owners, the dispute will probab'y end in a strike. The Trades aud Labor Council have taken the matter in hand, and are trying to arrange it,

The tailors' threatened strike ia Wellington has been settled. The barbers of Wellington have formed a union. The owners of the Wellington tramways have offered to share profits with the employes, and this has been accepted. In Napier men were paid Is 6J an hour, but the union rate is only Is 3J. The employers want to cut down to union rates, and the employes are going to strike.
