HILTON PUBLIC SCHOOL.

ANNUAL SWIMMING RACES. The annual swimming races instituted by Mr D. W. M. Burn, M.A., in connection with this school have become exceedingly popular with the pupils, and are looked forward to by them with considerable pleasure. The Hilton boys are especially favored in having such excellent opportunities for becoming adepts in the art of swimming. There is a splendid stretch of water in the Kakahu river immediately opposite the sohool, and in warm weather it is greatly patronised by the lads. The second year's swimming races took place there on Wednesday last, and were very successful. The weather was all that could be wished for, being decidedly hot, while the temperature of the wa.ter was such as made the sport very agreeable. The : general supervision of the contests was in the hands of Mr Geo. Steven, master of the Hilton school, Mr Julius Healey acting as starter, and Mr H. N. Hiskens as judge. A considerable number of the parents and friends of the lads attended to see the sports and took great interest in them, while the competition amongst the boys was very keen. A number of gentlemen from Geraldine were also present. In the unavoidabl absence of Mr Healey Mr U. Leary started some of the earlier events. Mr Healey arriving late. The pr z)s were a number of handsome and vluable articles sent up by Mr Burn from Oamaru, in accordance with a promise made by him to the boys before leaving Hilton.
