ST. SAVIOUR’S CHURCH, TEMUKA.

A meeting of the parishioners of St, Church was he'd last evening to consider a report from the vestry in reference to the erection of the new church. The Rev, T. A. Hamilton occupied the chair. The attendance was small. The chairman said the object of (he meeting was important. There had b*eu a difficulty over £-100. They had £BOO in band, and had to get £4OO more. This cctrd be borrowed, but the vestry did not st-e their way to borrow or go on until they had got the money. One member, Mr Palmer, had collected £7O. This meePng was called to see whether any financial means could be devised to raise the £4OO, or whether the project should bo relinquished. Mr Ptßmer asked when the meeting of the vestry h >d decidad in that way. The chairman said it was held on the 6lh of January lash Mr Palmer said it was no use for him to canvass if the vestry wotkad against him. It appeared to him the vestry wore going out of their sphere in interfering ia the matter. The chairman said his language about abandoning was too strong. The object of the meeting was to see what could be done with regard to raising the £4OO, Mr Palmer said it had not coat him much trouble to get the £7O. j|lf the parish wet*; properly canvassed there would be no difficulty in the way. The chairman said they could not do anything, as they had not a large meeting, so they might as well adjourn. If the thing was to be abandoned it would be an everlasting disgrace, after having gone so far. He thought it might be immediately raised if they tried. J!o church was built without d;bl. Surely

they could pay the £401) back in four years. He did not wish to appear to dictate to pecple, but they ought to come into the room and state their objection, and if they desired to abandon it let them do so in a manly way. They could not abandon it at a small meeting like this. The wbo’e of the parish ought to have a yoice in it. Members of other church bodies were watching their proceedings, and it would be a disgrace to them if they abandoned it. At any rate it would not do to abandon it at so email a meeting, as it would be discourteous to those who had

subscribed. Mr Lee said the great difficulty was to get bondsmen for tho £4OO. Ha was sorry if there were not 12 or 15 men iu tho parish v?ith sufficient love for tho Ohuech to sign such a bond. He would be very sorry if they cou’d not get 16 men, but if everyone said “ I wont sign it," it could not go ahead. He never saw bo much money in hand to build a church. Ho believed before the church was finished £9OO would be collected, jje n who could not give money would progive labor, and that would be equal to money. If it could be paid back in six ■sears be would not bs afraid of it. If the bonds were gut the church would go on. Ho movid—“ That this totaling stand adjourned iliii.il next Monday cvour.ng ’’ Hr Mason objeovd ' the mrnmaat. had had several moeti :gs, an- nothing had’bcea done. li.tho pawsfcwuors took any interest in It they would have bsen present,

He would move—“ That owing to the apathy shown the idea of a new church be abandoned.” The question of site was the great tumbling block. Only for that the church would have been nearly built. It was not his own personal feeling, but as so much epathy was shown he saw nothing for it but to abandon it. Mr Palmer obj?cted to the vestry interfering, It was none of thoir business. The ohaimm- paid tho vestry was responsible to the bishop. AfVr some further disoueeion the resolution cdpu ning the meeting «?ss earned by nine votes to three. The meeting adjourned to nsxt Monday evening. was—mmhiii—rm ii.i.nini j
